The new BMW R 18 motorcycle invokes the history and the iconic hallmarks of the BMW brand. The result: a true BMW cruiser that is full of character, surrounding the largest displacement boxer engine we have ever made and timeless design features, such as the white double striping on the BMW R 18 First Edition.
The BMW R 18 motorcycle includes a double-loop tubular steel frame with an exposed propshaft and spoked wheels.
The rear wheel is guided via a cantilever swingarm to give the illusion of a rigid frame with no rear suspension.
It conceals its bearings and spring/damper units. Modern technology is also installed, such as an integral antilock braking system, cornering ABS, assistance systems, fuel injection, and an upside-down Telescopic fork.
The motor powering the motorcycle is the new 1,802 cc (11.0 cu in), 90 horsepower (67kW) two-cylinder boxer.
This is the most powerful two-cylinder boxer engine BMW has ever built for motorcycles. The four-stroke engine valves are controlled by pushrods above the pistons, rocker arms, and tappets.
The production model features an electronically controlled injection system contrary to carburetor’s designs.
It also has electronic throttle control and engine management. A 3-way catalytic convert provides exhaust gas purification.
At 4750 rpm, the power output is 91 HP. The maximum torque is 158 Nm at 3000 RPM. However, there are always more than 150 Nm in the range 2000-4000 rpm.
